On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Iraqi Media Forum and the NGO Department in cooperation with the UN Women’s Office, held a seminar on Sunday, May 5, 2019, on enhancing the participation of women in peace and reducing the violations of women’s rights
The seminar included a number of topics, in the first topic the head of IWJF Dr. Nibras Almamory promotes the participation of women in peace, the extent of the violations they face as a result of electronic extortion and counterfeit communication pages, and consequently the roles they play in demanding the application of human rights principles and achieving community peace, especially in areas of conflict that require intensive work and effort.
In the second topic Mr. Dhia’a Al-Sarai UNESCO representative in Iraq, explained the volume of electronic violations that Iraq faces because of the lack of a coherent legal system and no executive decisions related to the ratification of the relevant international conventions. Al-Sarai added that women
in general are the most vulnerable to violence, as a result of the poor use of social networking sites, and this requires rapid action by the concerned bodies, especially the media and communications and the Ministries of Interior and Communications.
The official spokesman of the Ministry of Interior Major General Saad Maan explained the mechanism adopted by the Ministry of Interior to reduce the electronic extortion and how to combat cyber-crime, citing cases of women activists and journalists sought to undermine them through the sites of communication, finally he stressed on the importance of joint coordination to reduce cyber-crime, especially after the formal operation of the electronic verification unit
The informative Idris Jawad, a member of the advisory board of the Iraqi Media Forum, reviewed the stages of writing the draft law on cyber-crime and the most important points of disagreement and the efficiency of the concerned committees to write, discuss and approve it. Idris explained that we need more rapid measures than we need a law restricting freedom of expression
The official spokesman of the Federal Court Elias al-Samuk clarified paragraphs of the Iraqi Penal Code and the feasibility of them and how to invest them to reduce the electronic crime. Elias stressed that the biggest harm is to women as the weakest link in this aspect. There must be legal awareness about the most punitive sentences included in the Penal Code Of cyber-crime, concluded that the Federal Court is fully prepared to cooperate with civil society and media
The representative of the Department of Governmental NGO, Mrs. Hanadi Al-Attiyah congratulated the Media Center on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day and conveyed the greetings of the Director General of the NGO Department, Mr. Mohammad Taher Tamim, and declared that the Department of Organizations is continuing in the holding of meetings with the media forum for the purpose of implementing the stages of Atwar Bahjat in one of the squares of Baghdad and that soon will be announced the artist who will take over the task of designing the monument.
