The Iraqi Women Journalists Forum organized, on the first of February, at the level of three axes, a workshop on the rights of women working in media organizations and how to improve their work environment and in the presence and participation of media institution managers and stakeholders in the security, judicial and social institutions.
The workshop, which was moderated by the Forum’s Head, Dr. Nibras Al-Mamory, included several axes: The first is a paper on the level of gender and the work environment in the state’s media institutions, which was reviewed by the representative of the Board of Trustees of the Iraqi Media Network, Counselor Omar Al-Dulaimi, as well as the challenges facing women in the management of the media sector presented by the Head of the Nrt channel, Mrs. Sarwah Abdul Wahid. Where the two speakers presented their vision on the management of the public and private sector for labor policies and the challenges they face in terms of money, administrative and security, which was subsequently reflected on the role of women in those institutions.
As for the second axis of the workshop, there were live experiences of managing the departments in the media institutions, which were reviewed by the media director, Samara Mahmoud, director of news and political programs at Alsumaria, in addition to the legal and judicial framework for the protection and safety of women journalists, reviewed by the media spokesman for the Federal Court, Elias Samouk. The speakers discussed the importance of having gender-sensitive organizational work regulations and activating laws guaranteeing women’s rights, especially at work, citing what was included in the new labor law, especially with regard to the issue of harassment and leave.
The workshop also included, in its third axis, threats and risks in light of an unstable security environment reviewed by the Directorate of Relations and Information in the Ministry of Interior, in addition to implementing general policies related to gender in the Iraqi channel, reviewed by the consultant Dr. Fayrouz Hatim, and how to activate the network law to guarantee the rights of women.
The workshop, during its three parts, included a discussion and questions by the participants, which concluded with a set of recommendations that will be implemented in the next stage in cooperation with the official state media. The workshop is part of the Canadian Women’s Protection and Safety Project, sponsored by the Canadian Alternatives Organization with the help of the European Union.
